I have been looking at some mitre saws lately and this Makita LS1016L caught my attention, so I decided to research a bit more thoroughly. It has become quite a popular mitre saw so I decided to do a review of it.

Makita is a very well know manufacturer and distributor or houshold and commercial power tools. They have been know to manufacture quality equipment. When it comes to the Makita LS1016L 10-Inch Miter Saw they have not changed.

The Makita LS1016L is an update, and a much better version, of the LS1013

There a few exciting features on the Makita LS1016L:

  • Greater Cutting Capacity

The Makita LS1016L has been equipped with a direct drive gearbox and a patented retractable guard system which has been developed to increase vertical cutting capacity.

The retractable guard system  provides a 12 inch right angled cutting capacity and a 4-3/4 inch vertical baseboard cutting capacity. The six linear ball bearings help deliver smoother, more accurate cuts.

  • Easier Mitre and Bevel Cuts

The 4-3/4 inch sliding fence system you are able to make a varitey of cutting adjustment due to the fact that with four sliding fences you are able to make lower and upper fence adjustment.The saw has a miter degree of between 0 and 52 degrees left and between 0 and 60 degrees right.

The easily-accesible rear-handle bevel lock is able to adjust between 0 to 45 degrees to both sides. The dual front bevel scales also make it easier to make more precise adjustments. The Makita Ls1016L has a one-touch miter lock system. This is designed to make more accurate adjustments and in turn increase efficiency.

Precision cuts are also made easier by means of the built-in laser. The laser indicates the cut whether the blade is turning or not. It also includes an on-off switch and precise left-of-blade or right-of-blade are made possible uing the laser for micro-adjustments.

  • Smoother Operation

Makita LS1016lThe Makita LS1016L weighs less than most miter saws in its class which makes it portable. The Four-Steel Rail Sliding System requires less space than competing dual sliding miter saws.

By making the blade guard system see-through, Makita has made it possible to have greater visiblity of the blade and line-of cut. The 1016l has a one-step blade change process which means you won’t have to waste valuable time changing blades.The D-blade design,which is rubberized, adds a bit more comfort.

The Makita LS1016L is powered by a 15 AMP direct gear box motor.Which, unlike belt-driven saws, will not require maintenance.Through the soft-start feature, you are able to get softer start-ups whilst contant speed is maintained with Electronic Speed Control leading to smoother, more accurate cuts.

After going through some of the reviews of other purchasers of the Makita LS1016L, I came across a few things that should be noted:

Makita LS1016L: Positive Feedback

  • The 4 rails, compared to the 2 rail system found on most mitre saw, make for a more accurate cut
  • The blade goes from rest to full speed very quickly and very smoothly
  • One of the biggest crosscuts used in a 10″ Miter Saw
  • Large crown capacity
  • The handles in the base are large, rounded, and easy on the hands when carrying
  • The LS1016L maintains blade speed as you are cutting; it automatically ramps up motor torque to overcome the resistance of cutting. The saw never sounds like it’s working very hard

Makita LS1016L: Negative Feedback

  • The Makita LS1016L is heavy, however it is lighter than the rest of the mitre saws in its range
  • Some experienced the bearing travel as being a little rough. However, this seems normal as this smoothes out with use. The saw clearly needs to be “worn in”
  • Some experienced a blade wobble but this seems to have been restricted to only a few units and these were replaced by Makita with replacement units.

One reviewer described it as:“I think it is the best by far or any miter saw I’ve ever owned. It does everything well.” and another as “The saw is excellent”.
